Can an 18 month old sleep in their own room?

Short answer: Yes. Room-sharing guidance covers the first 6 months, and safer-sleep advice covers the first 12 months.

Babies change fast, so the answer depends on your child's age, weight and development, and on your product's instructions.

What the guidance says

  • The NHS advises placing your baby in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for every sleep, day and night, for at least the first 6 months.
  • Follow safer-sleep advice for every sleep until your baby is 12 months old (12 months from the due date for premature babies).
