British Standards for baby sleep products explained
Step by step
- A standard shows the product passed specific safety tests.
- No standard covers SIDS, so follow safer-sleep advice too.
What the guidance says
- Cots and travel cots: look for BS EN 716-1:2017.
- Moses baskets and carrycots: look for BS EN 1466:2014 or BS EN 1466:2023.
- Bedside cribs: look for BS EN 1130:2019.
- Mattresses: look for BS 7177:2008+A1:2011, and BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021 for cot, travel cot and crib mattresses.
- Sleeping bags: look for BS EN 16781:2018.
- Car seats: look for ECE R44.04 (or R44.03) or i-Size R129, shown by the 'E' mark label.
- No safety standard covers SIDS, so a product that meets a British Standard is not automatically safer for sleep.
