Cot mattress buying guide

1. Measure your cot first

Measure the inside of the cot or cot bed, not the outside. The mattress should fit snugly, with a gap of no more than 4cm on any side. The common UK sizes are:

• Cot bed mattresses: 140 x 70cm. Fits most cot beds and lasts from birth into the toddler-bed years.
• Cot mattresses: 120 x 60cm. The standard size for a cot.
• Space saver cot mattresses: 100 x 50cm. For compact and space saver cots.
• Crib and Moses basket mattresses. These are made for a specific crib or basket, so check the size against your model.
• Travel cot mattresses. Extra comfort for travel cots and playpens.

2. Choose a mattress type

• Foam: lightweight, breathable and good value. Look for a removable, washable cover.
• Fibre: layers of hypoallergenic fibre, which suit babies with sensitivities.
• Sprung: a spring unit wrapped in nursery-grade foam or fibre, giving firm, even support.
• Pocket sprung: individually pocketed springs that respond as your baby moves. A good long-term choice for cot beds.
• Natural coir and wool: natural fillings that are breathable and help regulate temperature.

3. Dual-sided mattresses

4. Safety essentials

Always choose a firm, flat, waterproof mattress that fits the cot well. Use a new mattress for each baby. Obaby crib, cot and cot bed mattresses are tested to BS 7177 and BS EN 16890:2017.
