Can I buy a second-hand Moses basket mattress?
Short answer: Check it is complete, undamaged, comes with instructions and meets the relevant British Standard. For mattresses, the Lullaby Trust recommends a new one for each baby where possible.
- Measure the basket or crib base. A snug fit with no gaps matters most.
- Firm, flat and waterproof.
- Replace it if it sags, tears or gets water-damaged.

- The Lullaby Trust recommends a new mattress for each baby where possible. A second-hand one should have a 100% waterproof cover, no rips, tears or water damage, no sagging, a good fit and a fire-resistant label.
- Mattresses: look for BS 7177:2008+A1:2011, and BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021 for cot, travel cot and crib mattresses.
