What safety standard should a Moses basket mattress have?

Short answer: Mattresses: look for BS 7177:2008+A1:2011, and BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021 for cot, travel cot and crib mattresses.
  • Measure the basket or crib base. A snug fit with no gaps matters most.
  • Firm, flat and waterproof.
  • Replace it if it sags, tears or gets water-damaged.

What the guidance says

  • Mattresses: look for BS 7177:2008+A1:2011, and BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021 for cot, travel cot and crib mattresses.
  • No safety standard covers SIDS, so a product that meets a British Standard is not automatically safer for sleep.
