Baby bath vs changing mat: which is better?
Baby bath
Used from birth.
- Check it is stable on your bath or floor.
- Check how it drains, dries and stores.
- Keep everything you need within reach before you start.
Changing mat
Used from birth.
- Choose a wipe-clean surface.
- Keep wipes, nappies and cream within reach so you never step away.
- Check the mat fits your changing unit top, if you use one.

What the guidance says
- Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a second. The water should be warm, not hot: run the cold first, then check it with your wrist or elbow.
- The NHS notes that RoSPA recommends not using baby bath seats.
- For topping and tailing, the NHS suggests holding your baby on your knee or laying them on a changing mat.
