My nursery is too small for a cot. What can I do?

Short answer: The Lullaby Trust suggests a travel cot, set up with the same safer-sleep advice, or a compact cot or space-saver mattress size. Keep it away from radiators, sunlight and blind cords.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Check the internal size and buy a mattress that fits with no gaps.
  • Adjustable base heights let you lower the mattress as your baby learns to sit and stand.
  • Teething rails protect the top rails from little teeth.

What the guidance says

  • If a full cot will not fit, the Lullaby Trust suggests a travel cot, set up with the same safer-sleep advice.
  • Place the cot away from radiators, direct sunlight and blind cords.
