Is it safe to buy a second-hand cot?

Short answer: It can be. Check it meets BS EN 716-1:2017, has all its parts and instructions, and buy a new mattress where possible, as the Lullaby Trust recommends.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Check the internal size and buy a mattress that fits with no gaps.
  • Adjustable base heights let you lower the mattress as your baby learns to sit and stand.
  • Teething rails protect the top rails from little teeth.

What the guidance says

  • Cots and travel cots: look for BS EN 716-1:2017.
  • The Lullaby Trust recommends a new mattress for each baby where possible. A second-hand one should have a 100% waterproof cover, no rips, tears or water damage, no sagging, a good fit and a fire-resistant label.
