Do I need a pram or a pushchair for a newborn?

Short answer: Newborns need to lie flat, so choose a pram, a carrycot or a pushchair whose seat lies flat from birth.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Check the folded size against your car boot and hallway.
  • Try the handlebar height, the weight and the one-hand fold.
  • Check whether a car seat can click on, and which adapters you need.

What the guidance says

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, in the feet-to-foot position (feet at the bottom of the cot, Moses basket or pram).
