Do I need a changing unit?

Short answer: Not strictly. A changing mat is enough. A changing unit adds a raised surface and storage, and a cot-top changer saves floor space.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Check the changing top height suits whoever does most changes.
  • Look for storage within reach so you never step away from your baby.
  • Wall-fix tall or heavy units as the instructions say.

What the guidance says

  • For topping and tailing, the NHS suggests holding your baby on your knee or laying them on a changing mat.
