Do I need a baby bath?

Short answer: No. The NHS says a baby bath or a clean washing-up bowl of warm water both work. Many parents like a baby bath for the support it gives.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Check it is stable on your bath or floor.
  • Check how it drains, dries and stores.
  • Keep everything you need within reach before you start.

What the guidance says

  • Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a second. The water should be warm, not hot: run the cold first, then check it with your wrist or elbow.
