Can a newborn sleep with a soft toy?

Short answer: Not in the cot. Keep soft toys and comforters out of the sleep space until 12 months. The 12-month point is about 12 months away.

Babies change fast, so the answer depends on your child's age, weight and development, and on your product's instructions.

What the guidance says

  • Keep the cot clear: no pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, loose blankets, soft toys, pods, nests, wedges or anything to keep your baby in place.
  • Follow safer-sleep advice for every sleep until your baby is 12 months old (12 months from the due date for premature babies).
