Can a baby sleep in a pram carrycot at night?

Short answer: Only if the maker says the carrycot is suitable for overnight sleep. Use its own firm flat mattress, with your baby on their back.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Check it fits your chassis.
  • Check whether it is approved for overnight sleep. Only some are.
  • Use the mattress supplied, with nothing added.

What the guidance says

  • Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition, with no raised or cushioned edges, that fits the cot or Moses basket with no gaps.
  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, in the feet-to-foot position (feet at the bottom of the cot, Moses basket or pram).
