Can a 4 month old sleep with a blanket?

Short answer: Yes, if it is lightweight, firmly tucked no higher than the shoulders, with your baby feet to foot. One doubled blanket counts as two. The 12-month point is about 8 months away.

Babies change fast, so the answer depends on your child's age, weight and development, and on your product's instructions.

What the guidance says

  • If you use sheets and blankets, tuck them in firmly no higher than shoulder height. One blanket doubled over counts as two.
  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, in the feet-to-foot position (feet at the bottom of the cot, Moses basket or pram).
  • Avoid weighted swaddles, weighted blankets, weighted sleeping bags and sheepskins.
