Are cot bedding sets with quilts safe?

Short answer: Quilts and duvets are not recommended under 12 months. Use the fitted sheets from a set and keep quilts and bumpers out of the cot until your child is older.

Here is the detail behind that answer, taken from current UK guidance from the NHS and the Lullaby Trust.

Things to check

  • Match the sheet size to the mattress (for example 120 x 60cm or 140 x 70cm).
  • Fitted sheets should sit tight and flat, with no loose fabric.
  • Buy at least two or three for night-time changes.

What the guidance says

  • Pillows, duvets and quilts are not recommended for babies under 12 months because of the risk of overheating and the head being covered.
  • The Lullaby Trust advises removing cot bumpers: babies can get tangled in ties and fabric, or fall after pulling themselves up on them.
