Sleeping bag or blankets? How to choose

Short answer: Both can be safe. A well-fitted sleeping bag stops your baby wriggling under covers. Blankets must be lightweight and tucked no higher than the shoulders.

Step by step

  • Sleeping bag: choose the size by weight, and a tog for the room.
  • Blankets: lightweight, tucked firmly, baby feet to foot.

What the guidance says

  • A well-fitted baby sleeping bag is an alternative to blankets. Most makers base suitability on weight (usually around 4kg) rather than age, so check the label.
  • If you use sheets and blankets, tuck them in firmly no higher than shoulder height. One blanket doubled over counts as two.
  • The Lullaby Trust does not publish a tog chart, because fabrics, layers and babies differ. Use the room temperature as a guide and check your baby's chest or neck.
  • Avoid weighted swaddles, weighted blankets, weighted sleeping bags and sheepskins.
